Bugel prostheses are quite often used in case of partial edentulousness. They have the shape of a bridge, which is why they got their name (from German "bugel" - "bridge") and are firmly fixed to the alveolar ridge. Also, the base of these prostheses is made of metal, which makes the structure very solid. Depending on the clinical condition of the oral cavity, bugel prostheses can perform several functions. In the simple case when a large number of teeth are missing, the bugel prosthesis fills the defect of the absent teeth, relying on the existing teeth. In the case where the existing base teeth have little mobility, bugel prosthesis can function as a fixing brace.

As this construction is removable, it needs to be removed from time to time to keep a hygienic cleansing, which is quite simple. In addition, the prosthesis is located in the mouth and doesn't interfere with speech or chewing. A bugel prosthesis is a very good alternative when fixed prosthesis is not possible.
